An Asscher cut diamond is a specially cut, octagon-shaped diamond featuring multilayered facets of three rows on top and three on the bottom. The cut melds princess and emerald cuts but consists of X-shaped facets, patterns extending from the center culet to the edges. Commonly referred to as the square Emerald cut today, the stone has a classy step-cut which draws the eye to the center stone readily.
The first Asscher cut diamond was designed in 1902 by the Asscher brothers, the Royal Asscher Diamond founders. The stone had 58 facets and became popular in the 1920s and later in 2002.
